About the Arctic Winter Games

The Arctic Winter Games (AWG) are a premier multi-sport event celebrating athletic excellence, cultural exchange, and community across the circumpolar North. Held every two years, the Games bring together youth athletes from regions including Northern Canada, Alaska, Greenland, and the Sámi communities of Scandinavia. More than just competition, AWG fosters connection, resilience, and northern pride — making it a powerful platform for young athletes to grow, lead, and shine on an international stage.

Representing the North with Pride

Basketball is a cornerstone of Team NWT’s presence at the Arctic Winter Games (AWG). Every two years, youth from across the territory come together to train, compete, and represent the NWT with strength, skill, and sportsmanship on one of the Arctic’s biggest athletic stages.

AWG offers a unique opportunity for northern athletes to compete at a high level while celebrating circumpolar culture and community. For Team NWT Basketball, it’s more than just a tournament — it’s a proving ground for dedication, teamwork, and northern pride.

Program Highlights

  • Two Teams Representing NWT: One boys team and one girls team, each with a head coach and assistant coach, selected through open tryouts and ongoing development camps.

  • Focus on Development: Athletes are supported with coaching, training opportunities, and leadership experiences that carry beyond the Games.

  • Territorial Unity: Players represent communities from across the Northwest Territories, bringing together diverse backgrounds under a common goal.

  • Strong Coaching Leadership: All coaches are certified (or working toward certification), and emphasize respect, hard work, and the growth of the whole athlete.

  • Community-Driven: From volunteer coaches to regional development efforts, the basketball program is deeply supported by NWT communities.

Success on the Court

Team NWT Basketball has a proud and growing legacy at the Arctic Winter Games, including:

  • 2024 Girls Gold Medal – A historic undefeated run, winning the territory’s first-ever gold medal in female basketball at the AWGs.

  • 2024 Boys Silver Medal – A strong campaign that brought the boys team to the gold medal final, narrowly falling short but earning a well-fought silver.

  • Continued Growth – NWT athletes are making their mark not only at AWG, but in interterritorial and national events — showing that our basketball talent can compete at any level.
